Cyberperformance

Peter Brook famously argued that any empty space can become a stage. But does this premise extend to cyberspace? What if every empty online space can be reimagined as a virtual stage? If theatre can begin with nothing more than someone walking across a space and another person watching, can cybertheatre begin with someone posting on a social media platform and another person viewing the post?

In Doomscrolling, Pavlos Panagiotidis investigates this provocative idea, exploring the potential for devising, directing, acting, and spectating in cyberspace. Originally conceived before the COVID-19 outbreak, the project became even more pertinent as the pandemic underscored the importance of digital interaction and performance in maintaining human connection.

With actors Dimitris Koidis and Leticia Texidor, and assistant director Neta Chen-Tov, the project investigated the boundaries of theatre in a digital context, examining how storytelling, performance, and engagement adapt to the virtual realm. Doomscrolling challenges audiences to consider the theatricality inherent in everyday online interactions and to reimagine cyberspace as a dynamic, interactive stage.
